The Beginning…
I have a very patient mom. She has been waiting a very long time for better medical ID jewelry. Sick of the tired, boring and plain stainless steel medical ID bracelets she had worn for decades, the seed was planted in 2008 when I started at North Bennet Street and my mom said “Finally, now you can make me a better bracelet!”. Fast forward to 2019 and our Christmas vacation trip back to Boston to visit family. One night I was sitting at the kitchen island (don’t all good ideas start here?) listening to my mom explain about her new CGM (aka constant glucose monitor)- my mom has been a diabetic for almost four decades, it is about time technology is catching up to help! As we talked, it hit me that I could actually make jewelry that mattered; that can empower the wearer; that can enhance someone’s style; that can be fun, beautiful and lifesaving. After lots of trial and error and finally listening to my gut, I realized I could turn my favorite second hand accessories into so much more.
I have always loved bangle bracelets. I’m no Iris Apfel, but I love collecting bangles and I love the way wearing them makes me feel. I also love hunting for them- thrift stores, second hand markets, auctions, yard sales…I am always on the lookout for bangles. And now with this project I have the perfect excuse to buy more! Now I am constantly keeping my eyes peeled for just the right gently used pieces that I can transform and repurpose. Once I find them I get to work at my trusty jeweler’s bench at home. I love the challenge of figuring out just the right way to make each piece into the best medical ID bracelet I can and it is an honor to personalize the perfect bracelet just for you!
